The results of the 2022 World Scholar’s Cup China Regional Competition were recently announced, and the students of ASJ performed well in this competition, with a record number of promotions and awards. ASJ students won a total of 29 awards for groups and individuals, of which 5 students won 6 gold award.


A total of 26 ASJ students participated in this competition, and 18 students from 6 teams successfully advanced to the global competition, accounting for about 70% of the winners. They will compete in the Global Round in August, competing against strong players from all over the country to qualify for the finals at Yale University in the United States.


What is WSC?The World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) is a team academic program with more than 15,000 students participating from over 65 countries each year. It is a fun competition that encourages students to study content not taught in traditional courses and promotes an engaging environment for debate and writing. Every WSC features four exciting events — Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge (multiple-choice test), and Scholar’s Bowl (multimedia quiz bowl), incorporating aspects of Science & Technology, Social Studies, History, Art& Music, Literature & Media, and Special Area.

Affected by the coronavirus, ASJ students chose to prepare for the WSC online. Teachers and students took time out of class to discuss and learn online, laying a solid foundation for preparing for WSC.

The training content is mainly divided into three parts: competition content and format; Introduction to English Debate; English debate simulation and teamwork. Since most of the contestants are new to WSC and are relatively unfamiliar with the content and form of the competition, the teachers helped the students analyze the four competition items (collaborative creation, team debate, team answer, and knowledge quiz) in the first stage based on experience and research, aiming to help students sort out the competition process and the division of labor in each link.

During the training, the teachers will also adjust the training content in time according to the actual situation of the students. Teachers found that the writing and answering sessions of WSC were similar to the exam, and the students were more familiar with them, so the teachers mainly emphasized the question type and preparation range in the training.


In the four competitions, team debate was the most difficult, and most of the participants did not participate in more formal debates, so they felt nervous, and they were relatively unfamiliar with the structure of the arguments and the terminology of the arguments. In this regard, the teachers combined the characteristics of British Parliamentary debate, explained to the contestants the role and task allocation of debate, as well as the use of debate terminology, so that everyone can initially understand the role and core tasks of different positions in the debate, so as to better carry out teamwork.

Due to the pandemic, we played online. Network problems have also become a non-negligible obstacle in the competition, and when encountering the unstable state of each other's networks, it will affect the progress of the discussion. However, it also allows us to listen more attentively to each other. Although there were quite a few difficulties during the competition, I enjoyed the whole competition.

During my daily studies, ASJ has many classes that can interact with teachers and have group discussions, especially the English speaking class, which not only makes the class interesting, but also learns and gets used to communicating in English, which helps me a lot in my preparation.

During the preparation process, two of my teammates contracted the new coronavirus and developed a high fever, and they could not participate online. Since I was left alone to prepare for the game, I had some very irritated times, but through the adjustment of my mentality and the help of the teachers, I did my best work, and my teammates also persevered in the fever, and we finally made it to the cut.

This competition made me realize the importance of teamwork, our team members are relatively new to debate, in order to solve this problem, we often practice together, and also find some symbolic topics to simulate training, in the process of teamwork skills have improved a lot.

I learned a lot through this competition. When preparing for the competition, I found that I needed more English vocabulary for the competition, and the dictionary became a must-have for my preparation. Due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, there will be slack when preparing for online battles, so in the process, I learned to combine work and rest, study carefully when studying, and relax seriously when relaxed.
